By the end of 1984 all the Troop's additional
activities had put a strain on funds. Extra money was
needed, and so it was decided to launch a Christmas Post
service in the village. For two Saturdays Scouts
knocked on every door and collected cards for delivery at 5pence
each. The cards were sorted on the boot of a car at
the Green and then delivered before lunch! £50 was
raised.
The Christmas Post continued
and grew until its final year in 2001. At its peak
the Post raised over £400.

Summer.

Late in the year Patrol
Camps were held at Horley, but to this day we have no idea why
Simon Ewles is signing into a torch...

At Summer Camp 1984 the Troop
needed some way of celebrating James Jennens amusing antics during
the week. Everyone agreed he had been a right wally -
and thus he became Summer Camp's first ever Wally of the Week,
and was duly doused using water filled balloons! The
"Wally of the Week" is still celebrated today.
In the spring Dale Burman, Brendan
Cox and Chris Allen retired as PLs to concentrate on GCSEs, with
Shaun Britton (Merlins), Mike Baker (Kestrels) and Nick Gracie-Langrick
(Tigers) joining James DeCaux (Otters).
Sadly Mike Lidster passed away
during 1984 after a short illness.

Here's the new PLs of 1984 out on a Night Hike,
setting the map above, and setting off below (Shaun Britton, Mike
Baker, James DeCaux, and Nick Gracie-Langrick).
The APLs attended, and Craig
Moore and Keith Brigden enjoyed the cocoa at the
end with Mike Baker.
