The Scouting movement started in 1907 and celebrated its centenary in 2007.   Here in Adderbury the current Troop started in 1979, but wasn’t actually the village’s first Scout Troop.   Research by Trevor Parry (author of Scouting for Banbury Boys) and Adderbury History Association show several previous incarnations of the Troop...

1912 1917 (approx)
April 1912 - The District AGM reports a new Adderbury Scout Troop has being formed.
19th June 1913 - The Banbury Advertiser reports 1st Adderbury Troop was represented at the Banbury scout rally.
1916 - The District register records that 1st Adderbury was in existence but the scoutmaster was away on war service.
Oct 1918 - Only three troops in are listed as existing in the district and Adderbury is not one of them.

 

1920s – 1930s
The Troop started sometime in the period 1920-1928.
July 1929 - 1st Adderbury Scouts and leaders were present at the presentation of the County totem pole.
24th April 1930 - The Banbury Guardian article “This scouting rage” by the leader of Bloxham School Scout Troop praises Adderbury Cubs but describes Adderbury Scouts as “fast asleep and Troop half dead”.
13 July 1937 - The District registration indicates that 1st Adderbury is no longer in existence.

1940s
The date of this Troop starting is unknown.
1942 - 1st Adderbury Scouts were presented with a first aid box by R. C. Ashmole of Nell Bridge Farm, for their assistance with the harvest.
1945 - The 1st Adderbury Scout Troop is noted as no longer operating.

 

Late 1940s or early 1950s
The Troop started sometime in period 1946-1954 and was very successful but closed a year later when the Scout Leader allegedly ran off with the troop funds!

 

1960s
1960s - 1st Adderbury Scouts was reformed by Rev Vyvyan, vicar of Adderbury.
1970-1975 - 1st Adderbury noted as being on the verge of closing, was later described as being "reinvigorated".

 

Today's Troop started in 1979 and has survived for the longest time.
