In 1984 the Troop was five years old, but faced a problem of falling numbers.   To combat this extra weekend activities were organised, including a canoe camp, heading down the River Avon from Stratford to Evesham, shooting all the weirs on the way.

SUMMER CAMP 1984

Summer Camp 1984 was held at Nook in Cumbria.   To the left you can see Simon Ewles being invested during the week, the Otters laying their kit out, and getting ready for inspection are Tigers (Nick Gracie-Langrick, Andy Whitehead, Richard Jennens, Keith Brigden) and Kestrels (Mike Baker, Simon Ewles, Robert Tyson, John Clinkard).

Also, John Clinkard abseils down a rock face and James Jennens shows Craig Moore and Andy Whitehead how to put the abseiling kit on.

Below is the noticeboard as it appeared at Summer Camp 1984.   It doesn't look much different today!

CHOCY-GATE!

It was the shock of Summer Camp '84.

Everyone knows each Scout is allowed just one chocolate biscuit for lunch at camp.   However, when the week's film was shown a few eagle eyed Scouts spotted Robert Tyson taking two chocy biscuits.   Click the image to see if you can spot the evidence!

By the end of 1984 all the Troop's additional activities had put a strain on funds.   Extra money was needed, and so it was decided to launch a Christmas Post service in the village.   For two Saturdays Scouts knocked on every door and collected cards for delivery at 5pence each.   The cards were sorted on the boot of a car at the Green and then delivered before lunch!   £50 was raised.

The Christmas Post continued and grew until its final year in 2001.   At its peak the Post raised over £400.

A Group of Scouts made use of the climbing wall at Drayton School during the late Summer.

PATROL CAMPS

Late in the year Patrol Camps were held at Horley, but to this day we have no idea why Simon Ewles is signing into a torch...

At Summer Camp 1984 the Troop needed some way of celebrating James Jennens amusing antics during the week.   Everyone agreed he had been a right wally - and thus he became Summer Camp's first ever Wally of the Week, and was duly doused using water filled balloons!   The "Wally of the Week" is still celebrated today.

In the spring Dale Burman, Brendan Cox and Chris Allen retired as PLs to concentrate on GCSEs, with Shaun Britton (Merlins), Mike Baker (Kestrels) and Nick Gracie-Langrick (Tigers) joining James DeCaux (Otters).

Sadly Mike Lidster passed away during 1984 after a short illness.

Here's the new PLs of 1984 out on a Night Hike, setting the map above, and setting off below (Shaun Britton, Mike Baker, James DeCaux, and Nick Gracie-Langrick).

The APLs attended, and Craig Moore and Keith Brigden enjoyed the cocoa at the end with Mike Baker.

Another idea to help increase Troop numbers in 1984 was a professionally made promotional video, which you can watch here by clicking the image.

A raft of ideas launched in 1984 to spice up the Troop's programme.   With a £15 loan from Troop funds a Tuck-Shop was launched selling delights like fizzy spacers, jelly babies, mini milky ways, crisps and drinks.   The tuck shop is still going strong today, and since 1984 has made an amazing £3,000 profit

The Troop celebrated halloween and James Jennens went to town as Dracula.

And so a year of change ended.

The first phase of the Troop's history was over, and a re-energised programme began to reverse the slide in membership numbers.

Scout Leader Ken Baker, Group Scout Leader Peter Jennens, and their young leader team were about to move the Troop into ... the video age.
